October Pine Ridge Trip
We took a mid-October trip to southern Illinois and hiked through rock formation areas in Ferne Cliff State Park and Giant City State Park. We camped at Pine Ridge Boy Scout Reservation for the weekend – this is a great location and provides for all your scouting needs, while staying very rustic in the overall environment. Setting up camp went really well, and we beat the incoming rain. All were bunked in before it started getting wet.
Slightly cloudy, with heavy tree cover made it seem much darker in the campsite as everyone woke up to our bugler’s reveille. after breakfast we headed out to see the Ferne Cliff waterfall. It was a nice hike back to the waterfall location, but despite the rain, there was not much of a waterfall when we arrived. The boys really enjoyed taking the paths up into the rock formations and taking in the sights from different vantage points.
We headed back to camp for a quick lunch, then headed back out to explore Giant City. We climbed the stairs of the water tower and some took the opportunity to check out the Giant City Lodge. The Lodge sported hand hewn wooden pillars, floors and beams, and you could still see the pneumatic hammer marks on the blocks that made up some of the walls and support posts. Then the group headed to the nature trail and found even more exciting paths and rock formations. Even though some of the boys had been to this location in the past year, they still had a great time.
